Holidays in the Eisack valley: a time for discoveriesFranzensfeste fortressThis enormous construction altogether covers a surface area of 1 square kilometre and consists of the lower, central and upper fortresses. Completed in 1832 as a defensive position on the axis between the Mediterranean and central and northern Europe, Franzensfeste was used from 1943 to 1945 by the German occupying forces for the gold reserves they had pillaged. The two-hour tour shows the parade ground in the lower part of the fortress, the neo-gothic church, the gold bunker, the obelisk, the staircase to the middle part and (on request) the staircase from the lower to upper part of the fortress. Open from 2.00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday in May, June, September and October and at 4.00 p.m. every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday in July and August.
