The central attraction is Ötzi the Iceman, whose mummified remains are approximately 5,300 years old. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
Museion, BolzanoThe museum for modern and contemporary art in the centre of Bolzano is absolutely up-to-date. A huge variety of artists display their works here in ever-changing exhibitions. Messner Mountain Museum Firmian, BozenIn many respects, the flagship of Reinhold Messner's MMM Museums at Sigmundskron Castle, Firmian near Bolzano is unique. Now a meeting place, it showcases the conflict between mountain and man. Paths, stairways and towers lead visitors from the depths of the mountains, over the summits as a guide and bridge to the other world, up to the history of mountaineering and the Alpine tourism into the present. Open from the beginning of March to mid-November, Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. www.messner-mountain-museum.it
Christmas marketsEach year, from the end of November to the beginning of January, South Tyrol's Christmas markets offer an atmospheric taste of the approaching season. The smell of traditional biscuits and cakes, mulled wine and South Tyrolean apple punch permeates the air. Ornate Christmas decorations and sweet melodies will entrance you. Christmas excitement can be found at the Christmas markets of Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone and Vipiteno. The small but elegant markets of Chiusa, Castelrotto, the Val Sarentino and Campo Tures have specially dedicated themselves to authentic South Tyrolean traditions and handicrafts.
The South Tyrolean wine routeThe South Tyrolean wine route is a must for all wine lovers and connoisseurs. It runs from Nalles to Salorno and covers practically 80% of South Tyrol's winegrowing area. A total of 30 wine cellars support this co-operation between the wine trade and tourism. The annual "wine route weeks" in May and June offer a perfect match between gastronomy, culture and handicrafts that is not to be missed.
